It is important to consider in life who will be able to assist you should you ever lose your mental capacity. Whilst it is a subject that not many like to entertain it is an all-important discussion that is often left to late in many cases.
Too often we receive calls from worried relatives when their mother or father is admitted into care suffering a lack of capacity yet being the subject of a financial assessment by the Local Authority. Without a valid Power of Attorney the option relatives are left with in such cases is to make an application to the Court of Protection for the appointment of a Deputy. This can be both emotional, time-consuming and costly.
A Power of Attorney will help to ensure that should the unthinkable happen and a person loses capacity someone that they trust and know well will be in the position to step in and assist you- without this a person’s decision making could be left stranded!
